"5" to Thrive in 2025 - Week 20 - Rebuilding After Setbacks

This week has been a humbling reminder of just how human I am. I got sick, and it felt like the world stopped spinning. As the one who keeps everything running in my family, it was incredibly frustrating to hit that sudden pause button. The to-do lists, the responsibilities—they all came to a halt, and for a moment, I felt like I lost control.

I won’t lie—I even considered stopping the very thing I love doing: blogging, posting, and sharing my journey with you. There was a moment where I felt like all the effort I’m putting into my passion might have contributed to me getting sick. It’s a strange feeling when your passion starts to feel like a weight. I’ve been pushing so hard to stay consistent with everything—work, family, content creation—that I didn’t give myself the time to properly rest. And honestly, that’s where the breakdown happened.

But here’s the thing I’ve realized: It’s okay to not have it all together. I’m human, just like you, and sometimes the very thing I love requires a balance of rest, patience, and reflection—things I didn’t give myself in this case. Getting sick wasn’t the end of my journey; it was an opportunity to slow down and regain perspective.

Reconnecting with my purpose during this time has helped me regain momentum. Part of that purpose is sharing my experiences with you through "5 to Thrive in 2025." I’m grateful to be writing today, as it’s a reminder of why I do this work—to inspire and stay on track. This week’s "5 to Thrive" is all about rebuilding momentum after illness, injury, or any setback. Whether you’ve faced a similar challenge or are feeling overwhelmed by life’s curveballs, you’re not alone. With a little patience, self-compassion, and focus, you can regain momentum and keep moving forward.

1. Give Yourself Permission to Rest and Heal

When illness or injury hits, it’s easy to feel frustrated or guilty about stepping back. But remember: rest is part of the recovery process. Giving yourself permission to take a break doesn’t mean giving up; it’s a vital part of regaining your strength and energy.

Why is This Important? Rest recharges your body and mind, allowing you to come back stronger. Pushing through exhaustion can lead to burnout, and sometimes, doing less is actually more productive in the long run. Taking this time to heal properly also allows you to be more effective once you start moving forward again.

Action Step: Allow yourself a full day (or even a few hours) of rest. Take time to sleep, relax, or do something that helps you unwind. Trust that this pause will help you recover and ultimately regain your momentum.

2. Start Small—Set Micro-Goals to Rebuild Confidence

Set small, achievable goals to rebuild your confidence. This isn’t about doing it all at once but making progress in small ways.

Why is This Important? Micro-goals provide quick wins, giving you a sense of accomplishment without overwhelming yourself. Small victories build momentum and help rebuild your self-esteem.

Action Step:Choose one small task to accomplish today. It could be something as simple as responding to an email or writing a short paragraph. Celebrate that win!

3. Shift Your Focus—Setbacks Are Opportunities to Learn

Instead of viewing your setback as a failure, try to see it as a chance to learn something new about yourself, your limits, and your priorities.

Why is This Important? Viewing setbacks as learning opportunities shifts your mindset from frustration to growth. It helps reduce the emotional weight of the setback and provides a clearer path forward.

Action Step: Reflect on what this setback has taught you. What have you learned about your needs, limits, or priorities? Use these insights to adjust your approach moving forward.

4. Practice Patience and Self-Compassion

It’s easy to be hard on ourselves when we can’t keep up with our usual pace. But we must remember that recovery—whether emotional or physical—takes time.

Why is This Important? Self-compassion reduces stress, builds resilience, and helps you recover faster. It’s essential to treat yourself with the same kindness and patience that you would offer a close friend.

Action Step: Take a moment to speak kindly to yourself today. Remind yourself that it’s okay to rest and that you’re doing your best. Write down one thing you’re grateful for, even if it’s just being able to take things slow.

5. Reconnect with Your "Why" and Take One Action

When setbacks hit, it’s easy to lose sight of why you’re doing what you’re doing. Reconnect with your deeper purpose and take one small action toward that goal.

Why is This Important? Reaffirming your “why” reignites your passion and gives you the motivation to push through setbacks. Taking even a small step keeps you moving forward, no matter how slow.

Action Step: Write down your "why" and take one action, no matter how small, that moves you closer to that goal.

Final Thoughts: From Setback to Comeback Setbacks don’t define your journey. They offer us valuable lessons and the chance to come back even stronger. This week, I encourage you to be kind to yourself, take things step by step, and remember that recovery takes time.
